1. a small bomb, usually thrown by hand; hand grenade: »

The soldiers threw grenades into the enemy's trenches.

2. a round glass bottle filled with chemicals that scatter as the glass breaks. Fire grenades are thrown on fires to put them out. Illuminating grenades are used at night to light up land areas.
